Blessings Of May

To my dearest, loving mother and my father bowed and old,
I am going to send greetings, to you, true and noble souls
Altho I am not near you as I'm writing here tonight
In memory I can see you with your loving smiles as bright
With your children gathered around you, those that are not far away
Reaching out a hand to help you, and to cheer you on your way
Dearest ones, you're reaping blessings that were sown in days gone by
Blessings sent from God to give you peace and love, and hope, and joy
Should a tear come, blessed parents; as you read these lines of mine
Think of how we'll be united, you with yours and me with mine. *

*My parents moved from Baker, Oregon to a small farm in Durkee. Not being used to having oil lamps, the first night we did not have any lights in the house. Mother had received a letter from her parents that day saying they were growing old, and how after not seeing them for a number of years, she may be too late. She wrote this poem to them while we youngsters held matches for her to see by. - Josephine
