Brotherly Love

Did you see any little children
Left groping and alone
Did your heart reach out to gather them in
Or send them to an orphan's home?

Or did you let a stranger
come right within your midst
And take a lamb from the pasture of God
Because brotherly love was amiss?

Do you hold with God a position
With good works as its companion
To shield the weak and tender plants
To become as sweet as Lebanon?

What are we worth with all our wealth
To good and the atonement
If in banks we heap it high
While little children hungry cry?
I'd rather be a Lazarus, I
A beggar without ornament

I dream and fortune smiles at me
Like fruits upon an apple tree
Where all the boughs are high, for lo
Love, for his love we must bestow
Until it falls like beads of dew
To withering plant's love to renew

Little tear-dimmer eyes grow bright
Through Christ's great love bend their strife
Through the tree of sacrifice
Spring up a tree of life.
